What do you think about this: should fanfiction and fanart be canon or not?
Should we keep to the rules that we can read from the books? Should we always mind the personalities of the characters and the relationships between the characters? Or can we take liberties with them?
Personally I don't mind a bit of 'what if's here and there, and I love parodies, but I hate it when a characters goed wildly out-of-character. Isn't one of the reasons we love the characters because they are who they are?

I think that personalities should be kept although sometimes if it's for comical use then it's cool to see them completely wako. In my opinion. As for relashionships, well, I think it's kinda fun to play around with that.
As for fanart, the sky's the limit. If you stick to exactly what's in the books then it's all good but we need to have a few 'what if's every once in a while, so we can wonder exactly what's going on in the picture.

I definitely agree with both of you! As a writer of fanfics, I know how hard it is to stay in the limit of what's canon. But we should keep in mind that, there are certain situations in which a character is allowed to go slightly out of character. You must always keep in mind the contest the character is in before casting the "uncanon" anathema. Honestly, I really hate it when good writers spoil everything by messing up with characters. I'm a great supporters of the free ships front, that is where most of the fun is!!!

Yes...shipping all the way! There are so many tiny loopholes in the canon story, that there are a bazillion stories to wright about things like 'mmm, what would Lucius be doing at this moment?' or 'what if Dumbledore and McGonagall had a meeting now?' And then there's the fact that we see most of the story from Harry's pov, and all the other characters have their own stories of which we know slightly less to almost nothing. So, there's a well of creativity just in the books.
And about humour: I love parodies, where the characters are grossly exagerated, something like the Potter Puppet Pals, or some great fanfics I've read.

Absolutely. There's really not much about shipping in the books. Except for Harry's crush on Cho and the Krum-Harry-Hermione triangle there's barely anything. And nothing about the teachers. So there's lots of possibilities.
So what do you guys think about fics that don't follow some facts in the books? Like for example those that state: "Does not follow HBP" so that certain-someone (don't wanna give anything away...) is still alive or summat like that? I think it's all good 'cos if another book comes out in the middle of your fic it can completely ruin your plot. Although I think it's still important to be acurate. You don't want to go completely out of setting or anything like that. It's kinda like staying in character I guess...

I honestly think that fanfics has been invented to free one's imagination. I have read so many wonderful stories around the web, which were full of uncanon stuff. Did it spoil the fun? Absolutely not! As I'm finding really hard to imagine a Hogwarts without Dumbledore, I'm sure I'll end up writing uncanon Dumby-is-alive-here-and-who-cares-if-he's-not-in-the-books stuff! Support freedom of thought in the fandom ;D !

Yeah! Long live the uncanony Dumby-is-still-alive-here-and-who-cares-if-he's-not-in-the-books stuff!! ! What does bug me is how lots and lots and way too many stories send the trio/the school off to America. Sorry, but there's like too many. And the I'm-gonna-add-a-student-'cos-I-wanna-be-in-the-story things bug me too. I'm all for adding teachers, but add a student in the middle of yeah 6 or summat... yeah, questionable.

Oh, I'm all for freedom of creativity, but many times I find myself reading fics that totally lack the atmoshpere that the wizarding world is made of, and I find that a pity. The wizarding world is as big as our own world so there should be enough to write about, but some stories totally seem to miss the point, in my opinion.
About original characters...I love making up my own, and I love learning other fan characters, but I dislike it when all the action seems to revolve around those characters, and, I hate to say this, but many characters are so cliché and 2-d...anyway, if you want to use clichés, you really need very good non-cliché reasons for them.

Has anyone read the Alessandra Capizzi fanfic "The Snake and the Eagle?" I've read it and been trying to save the text to my laptop (I'll leave all of the author's names intact; I don't want to take anything and use it for my own purposes, I just want to save a full copy, with the images, that I can read) but I'm having problems. I'm using Wordpad, Microsoft Word, and Notepad for my main writing programs. When I paste the text into one of them it cuts half of the text off. Could someone e-mail me a copy of the story please? My e-mail is kellyleighcrutcher@hotmail.com.

Sorry. I didn't see what the other messages here said until now.
I think if you want to go canon, you should, and if you want to add a few 'what ifs,' it's okay.
My version of the characters in my mind isn't canon. I couldn't see *anyone* playing Severus Snape other than Alan Rickman. I saw the movies before I read the books, so the movie versions are stuck in my head. When I think "Harry Potter" I think of the movie characters.
